Perhaps this summer made you realise your patio is too small for entertaining. You found yourself chasing the sun with a garden chair, wishing for more privacy, or looking out at a space that never quite felt finished.

As autumn arrives, those frustrations are still fresh, but they make a useful starting point for planning something better.

If you would love to enjoy a transformed garden next spring/summer, now is a good time to begin the conversation. A considered garden takes time to design, plan and build, and starting early gives you room to make decisions with confidence.

Think about how you want to use your garden

Before choosing paving or plants, think about everyday life outdoors.

Would you like somewhere comfortable for a quiet morning coffee? A generous dining area for family and friends? Space for children to play, or planting that brings colour and interest to the view from your kitchen?

It is equally useful to think about what did not work this year. Awkward steps, overlooked seating areas and disconnected spaces can all help shape a clearer brief.

You do not need to arrive with all the answers. A few photographs, some inspiration and a sense of your priorities are enough to get started.

Give the design time to develop

The most successful gardens feel connected—to the house, to their surroundings and to the people who use them.

Achieving that means considering how the different elements work together. The position of a terrace affects how you move through the garden. Planting can frame a view or make seating feel more private. Materials help establish the character of the whole space.

Starting in autumn gives you time to explore these choices, review samples and refine the layout before construction begins.

It also creates an opportunity to think beyond summer: what will you see from indoors during the colder months, and where could structure, planting or carefully positioned lighting add interest?

Plan the practical details early

Behind every finished garden are decisions that are less visible but just as important.

Access for machinery and materials, changes in level, drainage and any necessary permissions can all influence the scope and sequence of a project. Discussing these early helps build a realistic picture of what is involved.

The same applies to budget. An open conversation about your priorities helps your landscaping team identify where investment will make the greatest difference and whether any elements could be delivered in stages.

Work towards a realistic programme

If you have a particular occasion or season in mind, mention it at the outset.

Design development, material availability, the scale of construction and weather conditions can all affect timings. Starting the conversation now gives you more time to understand the process and agree a realistic programme for your garden.
