How Much Does a Luxury Garden Redesign Really Cost in London in 2026?

It's one of the first questions every client asks us, and it's one of the hardest to answer honestly — because at the luxury end of the market, "it depends" isn't a cop-out, it's the whole point. A bespoke garden transformation is priced around your vision, your site and your ambitions, not a standard rate card. Here's what genuinely drives the number for a high-end London garden, and where you should expect to land.

The headline figures

As a starting point of reference, our own projects begin at around £450 per square metre — a figure that reflects bespoke design, premium materials and specialist craft rather than a standard rate card. From there, the total investment scales with ambition:

• A considered refresh of an existing high-quality garden — replanting, refined hard landscaping, upgraded lighting — typically starts around £25,000–£50,000

• A full bespoke redesign — new layout, premium materials, structural change, integrated lighting and irrigation, a proper planting plan — generally sits between £50,000 and £150,000 for a well-proportioned London or Surrey garden

• Signature transformations — multiple garden "rooms," swimming pools or natural pools, mature specimen planting, bespoke outdoor kitchens and entertaining pavilions — regularly move into the £150,000–£300,000+ range

Why luxury gardens are priced differently

A premium garden isn't simply a bigger version of a standard one. What you're paying for is different in kind, not just in scale:

• Bespoke design, not a template. Every luxury project starts with a proper design process — site survey, concept, detailed drawings, 3D visualisation where useful — often running £3,000–£15,000+ on its own for a garden of real scale and ambition. This is what ensures the finished space is genuinely yours, not an assembly of catalogue features.

• Materials sourced, not stocked. Hand-selected natural stone, bespoke joinery, specimen trees chosen individually rather than from a supplier list — the material cost reflects rarity and quality, not just square metreage.

• Specialist trades. Water features, structural steel, bespoke lighting design, irrigation and smart-control systems all bring in specialist subcontractors working alongside the core landscaping team, each priced at a premium for the calibre of finish.

• London site conditions. Many of the gardens we work on — particularly in Zones 1–4 — have restricted access, mature existing planting to protect, or sit within conservation areas. Careful, considered execution on a constrained site costs more than working on open ground, and it should.

Where the investment goes

On a luxury project, the split between what you see and what you don't shifts compared with a standard garden:

• Design and planning — the single most valuable spend on any high-end project. A well-considered design prevents costly changes mid-build and ensures every element — from sightlines to drainage falls — is resolved before anyone picks up a tool.

• Groundworks and infrastructure — drainage, irrigation, lighting cabling, structural foundations for pergolas, pools or garden buildings. This is invisible once finished, but it's what makes a garden perform beautifully for decades rather than years.

• Hard landscaping — porcelain, natural stone, bespoke joinery and steelwork typically account for 60–75% of a design-led budget.

• Planting — at the luxury end, this often means semi-mature or specimen trees and shrubs bought in for instant impact, rather than young stock left to grow in over several seasons — a meaningful cost difference, but one that transforms how quickly a new garden feels established.

The features that define a luxury garden

Certain elements consistently separate a premium project from a standard one:
